Former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31. The Frenchman decided after suffering a knee injury during his debut for Italian Serie A club Como in a match against Sampdoria. Although the injury has ended his playing career, Varane plans to remain involved with Como in a non-playing role.
Varane’s professional journey began with French club Lens, where he made 24 appearances and scored two goals. His performances quickly earned him a move to Real Madrid in 2011. Over the next decade, Varane became a defensive stalwart for the Spanish giants, making 360 appearances and finding the back of the net 17 times. His time in Spain was marked by incredible success, as he played an integral role in one of Real Madrid’s most dominant eras.
In 2021, Varane moved to Manchester United. Despite battling injuries, he managed to make 95 appearances for the English side, contributing two goals. His time at Old Trafford was mixed, as he faced setbacks, but he still delivered when on the pitch, helping the team to domestic success. In the summer of 2024, Varane joined Como in Serie A, but his playing career came to an abrupt end after just one appearance due to a serious knee injury.
A Glittering International Career
On the international stage, Varane made his debut for France in 2013 and went on to earn 93 caps, scoring five goals. He was a crucial part of France’s 2018 FIFA World Cup-winning squad, where his leadership and composure helped his team lift the trophy.
He also contributed significantly to France’s victory in the 2021 UEFA Nations League and was instrumental in their run to the 2022 World Cup final.
A Legacy of Titles and Triumphs
Varane’s career is filled with silverware, including 18 trophies during his time at Real Madrid. He lifted the La Liga title three times, won the Champions League four times, and claimed multiple Super Cups and Club World Cups. His time at Manchester United also brought success, with victories in the FA Cup and EFL Cup.
