Real Madrid custodian Thibaut Courtois sidelined with abductor injury, Lunin set to step in

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been ruled out for the next two weeks after sustaining an abductor injury in his left leg. The Belgian shot-stopper picked up the injury during the 1-1 derby draw against Atlético Madrid, a match where he appeared to struggle in the final stages. Real Madrid confirmed his diagnosis on Monday after a series of medical tests.

“Following tests carried out today on our player Thibaut Courtois by Real Madrid’s Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with an abductor injury in his left leg,” the club announced on their website.

Courtois missed Monday’s recovery session, having undergone further evaluations earlier in the day. The injury is expected to keep him out until mid-October, with reports indicating he could return in time for Real Madrid’s match against Celta Vigo on October 19.

Andriy Lunin to cover for Thibaut Courtois

In the absence of Courtois, Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin is set to take the reins for Madrid’s upcoming fixtures. Lunin, who shared responsibilities with Kepa Arrizabalaga last season while Courtois was recovering from a long-term knee injury, will step in once again.

This will mark Lunin’s first appearance of the season, and he is expected to feature in two crucial games before the international break: a Champions League clash away at Lille on October 2, followed by a La Liga encounter with Villarreal on October 5.

Courtois, who was targeted by Atlético fans during the derby with objects thrown his way, managed to finish the match despite his visible discomfort. His absence comes at a crucial point in Madrid’s campaign as they look to maintain momentum in both domestic and European competitions.

The Belgian goalkeeper has been a key player for Real Madrid since his return from injury last season, notably playing a pivotal role in their Champions League triumph. His experience will be missed, but Lunin’s readiness to step in provides some stability for Carlo Ancelotti’s side during this brief setback.
