Portugal was already top of the group but was stunned in their final group stage game before time struck two minutes later when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia fired a low shot past Diogo Costa. That goal came as Georgia overturned possession and hit Portugal on the break, setting the tone for the rest of the night.

The underdogs did not need dominance and made the most of their opportunities, with Georges Mikautadze converting a second-half penalty to propel Georgia to their surprise victory. Georgia was content to let Portugal control possession because they were steely in defense and closed down space to limit Portugal’s chances, and they waited for an opportunity to threaten on the counterattack. Georgia had few opportunities, but Portugal had few real threats; the underdogs maintained their shape flawlessly, frustrating the Group F winners.

Georgia completed the biggest Euros shock

Georgia had the least possession of any squad in Euro qualifying, but they got the job done and advanced to the finals. They lacked control against Portugal but did what was necessary – and in style.

Georgia manager Willy Sagnol assigned Kvaratskhelia and Mikautadze the task of waiting high up the pitch, ready to strike Portugal when fortune came their way, which they did early on, with the latter intercepting a misplaced Antonio Silva pass and setting up a well-taken opener. Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was instrumental in Portugal’s 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic, had little to do for the majority of the night as the team struggled. Georgia completed the greatest Euros upset in history, according to FIFA rankings, by defeating Portugal and creating a memorable night in their debut major tournament. They are presently facing Spain in the last 16, while Portugal will face Slovenia.
